The tension between focused stillness and frenetic urgency when working from observation has always been central to my practice. The pandemic forced me outdoors, and while I have always identified as a landscapist, I was never particularly interested in plein air painting. Unsurprisingly, it’s lovely to work outdoors, and the decisions it requires feels directly connected to working from the figure. My daughter started school in 2021, presenting me with slots of time to work I hadn’t had in years. There’s only so much painting you can get done before the school bell rings – a certain kind of gift. These shorter sessions have provided the primary structure under which I’m making these works.
Selections of these paintings are below. Most are oil on paper or panel, of modest sizes, including some drawings. Primarily painted within a few miles of my house, some are further flung or from residencies in Kansas and New York, or trips with friends.
